“After my dad passing away on the 14 December 2017, I started hunting for some memorabilia on the internet and came across this photograph. Thank you for posting it, however - you are wrong. The tenor sax player on the far right of the photo is not Alf Lee, it is my dad - Bill Rodgers. He also played clarinet and provided vocals.
Deborah Callow - a very proud daughter.”

“Thanks Debbie... I will take the photo and ask my mother ( widow of Ernie Cartlidge ) if she can remember any more about that photo. Pete”

“Hi Pete

My dad OWEN YOUNG played in Jack Kirkland's band the saxophone and the clarinet all over Manchester and Stockport for many years, he isn't on this photo as not sure when he joined them. He used to also pay for Raymond Woodhead and his orchestra too. He was born in Hyde and we lived in Chorlton and then Northenden. He was born 1927-1994. He was a self taught musician and remember him practising playing Moon light serenade and strangers on the shore. I sadly didn't ever go and see him play but any information you have would be appreciated. I also have a photo of Jack Kirkland and his wife in 1977 at my parents silver wedding somewhere.

Would love to connect with any band members that may remember him who may still be alive!

“I met my wife at Manchester University in 1960, and we went many times to the Saturday night hop at the University Union. Jack Kirkland’s band often provided the music, and to a callow 18year old were very good. My opinion still holds.
PS There was a singer ‘the delicious de-lovely Delilah’
How we remember ‘It’s now or never, it’s upside down, it’s back to front dear, please turn it round’!

“My Dad and George Taylor(tenor sax) were great friends from their school days at Alex Park and Stockport School. I thought that was George on the far right of the photo, but apparently not. Mum & Dad sometimes used to go to dances where the Band played. I didn’t take much notice at the time but now, being into dancing & big band music, I’d love to be able to go back in time to those days!”
