Artefact

Photograph
Tony Wilson
2007

Southern Cemetery, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester: the grave and headstone of Factory Records founder, Anthony H (Tony) Wilson.

Designed over a three year period by Peter Saville and Ben Kelly and as a result, unveiled three years late in 2010. The headstone is made from polished black granite, designed to reflect everything around it, just as Wilson had done in his life. The font is ‘Rotis’, which had also been used for the last Factory logo. These photographs were taken on what seemed like an entirely appropriate wet and rainy day, but I'm not sure whether that's called pathetic fallacy or anthropomorphism. (If you happen to want to seek this out, you’ll need plenty of time and the knowledge that it is grave number 118 in Plot B!)
