The Hacienda
1988

It was rather decadent to go clubbing midweek but then this was Manchester during the late 1980s. "Zumbar" usually packed out The Hacienda on a Wednesday night as much as it did on a Saturday night. One of the early acts featured during an evening of entertainment was The Joan Collins Fan Club - a.k.a. Julian Clary and his sidekick, Fanny The Wonder Dog.

The image shown here includes (l-r) "Paddy" (a friend of a friend who was visiting from Sheffield University), me, Mancunion music critic and writer Jimmy Dean (where are you now, Jimmy?), Nicole Iszak, MANUS Women's Officer, and a chap whose name I don't recollect. PHOTO: CRAIG SMITH

“I was the barman for most of the zumbar nights. Loved it. It was great being held in the downstairs Kim Philby bar.”
