Speech by Ida Carroll for the Northern School of Music at the start of the Autumn term 1959.

The speech starts with a prayer thanking God for the Arts and goes on to read a bible story of King Solomon. It reminds Ida of the essay asked of students sitting the Principles of Teaching paper in London just done (possibly the LRAM exams the NSM students sit), which asks for an essay on fine art.

Ida mused if modern architecture would "even give the same feeling of satisfaction to the skilled men and intricate design of long ago, and whether the almost stark line of many new building would be accepted as a thing of beauty and a joy for ever."
