A programme for the Manchester String Orchestra in the Northern School of Music's archive. I'm not sure what the connection with the school is apart from the fact that they did have a string orchestra themselves. Perhaps students performed with it?

The orchestra was conducted by a woman, Clarice Dunington, and was led by a woman, Eva Martin. Fantastic!

If anyone has info about these two women or the orchestra itself, I would be fascinated to learn it.

“I am currently working on a catalog of works for string orchestra (professional or advanced level only) that has over 30,000 entries, which I plan on publishing in the coming years. I am also working on a dissertation titled The History of the String Orchestra and Its Repertoire 1581 - 1914, which will hopefully be followed by a book on string orchestras and their repertoire 1914 - Present.

If anyone comes across string orchestra program leaflets or anything else associated with professional and university string orchestras I would very much appreciate if you could let me know.”

“Hi Tv_vitek, thanks for your interest! If you have a look at the RNCM Archives catalogue there are a few collections which include programmes from the late 19th to early 20th century. www.archives.rncm.ac.uk/
There is also the Hallé Archives, the Henry Watson Music Library in Manchester, and back catalogues of local newspapers such as the Guardian, many of which are available through ProQuest.
Feel free to email me at the RNCM (email on the catalogue page) but I might take a while to get back to you at the moment, I hope that's ok.”
