The last time Espers played in Manchester, I was unable to attend and very upset as I'd become a huge fan after their first Lp.

So when I heard they were playing again I was very pleased, and when a friend offered to buy me the ticket for my 40th birthday I was double pleased.

Klondyke Bowls Club is a strange venue for a gig, but that's not to say it's a bad venue, infact the flowery wall paper and stripey curtains worked well with the folky tones of the bands playing.

The night was also my first hearing of Starless & Bible Black, which is strange cos I've been to 'Hedge' a few times and apparently they play there quite regularly. I thought they were excellent and bought the CD after the gig.

Support also came from Drag City's Edith Frost, and another folky band, with a sort of gentle Gorky's Zygotic Mynci sound, but I didn't catch their name.

Espers were fantastic... hypnotising, melodic. Very beautiful music, and they came across as good people too. The crowd were very attentive, a load of us all sat crossed legged at the front- which reminded me of seeing Spacemen 3 at the International Club in the '80s.

Well done Popart and Industry for putting on such a good gig!
