Hypnotone, Glenn Routledge
Record / CD / Tape, 1991
Ai - Creation Records 1991. Japanese influenced design commissioned by Tony Martin. The characters on the front say "Nihon-sei" (made in Japan). The Japanese text on the back of the artwork (and in the background on the front) says "Sekkusu (sex) + Tekunorojii (technology) = Mirai (future)". The main title "Ai" is the Japanese word for Love - also the title of the seventh track on the album. (Artwork by Glenn 1991)

Manto - First Birthday flyer 1991 - big, brash and bright orange (original). A new set of cards for the directors too (including the wonderful Carol Ainscow who was a big inspiration to all) x
Ethos
Fanzine, 1992
An A3 folded to A4 large monochrome flyer given out at the door of various club nights in and around the 'village'. We used some of the press coverage, our own graphics and additions from Homocult.
The State
Flyer, 1992
Early days flyer for 'ethos' - 24 Hour Party People! - Held at the State, Whitworth Street, Manchester. This was a popular night and signalled a change in dance music in gay venues. We imported DJ's from other non-gay venues and went with big banging tunes ... A busy hot sweaty night indeed! (4 Hour Party People by Homocult)

Two clubbers at one of our first nights - 'Whip it up!' at the Venue in Whitworth Street. I think the guy on the right is 'Gordon'?

The State, The Gay Village
Flyer, 1992
The first 'Strangeways' nights and how best to communicate what sort of people were going to be there? Put them on the flyers (what a cute bunch) .. and this we did for a few months. We organised a photo booth and encouraged everyone to get in there and get on a flyer as well.

Glenn and Chris (Kross) Taylor on the door at ethos @The State. Note the 'ethos' poster and the black and white t-shirt I am wearing (some more of my own indulgent graphics). These popular Friday nights were open to all and a good mix of friendly people

Chris (Kross) Taylor and Glenn at ethos @The State, Whitworth Street. John (Poptastic) Hamilton is sat down at the till. Good times, breaking away from the usual run of the mill 'Canal Street' nights. Around this time, we approached Cruz 101 to use their club for an event, but the manager 'Melvyn' refused, laughing saying that "they won't be having customers who dance waving their hands in the air in their club" - how things have changed since then?!

Happy photo of Brendon taken at Ethos - The State, Whitworth Street 1992. Black t-shirt with ethos and eden logos printed on the front. Notice the rough walls of the club recently painted black by the owners!

Membership Card, 1992
Membership form and card for Whip it Up. All the imagery was black, white and grey, plus we had 6 foot cut outs of this chap in the hat and whip placed all over the Venue. All tongue in cheek ...

The Venue (Whitworth Street West)
Flyer, 1992
Saturday night at the Venue, with a line up of DJ's including Danny Spencer from Candy Flip. I loved this flyer which was dark red printed onto metallic silver with an orange reverse. Good night!

Flyer, 1992
Whip it Up at the Venue - second set of flyers printed blue on gold metallic, but the scan does not do it justice here. Printed magenta on reverse and includes a line up of DJ's but also some sponsorship from Mas-If the clothing label. This flyer became a big favourite and was published in some of the music press at the time.

SSR (School Of Sound Recording), Ten Bar
Flyer, 1992
TeN Café Bar - an early first for the Northern Quarter, which was simply known as Tariff Street at that time. Owned by John Breakell and Heather? - a popular bar with musicians and those at the School of Sound in the basement of the building. Interior ideas/design (lots of it!) by Brendon and graphics by Glenn.

The Mineshaft
Flyer, 1993
Club La-La (Carry on Dancing after Flesh) - now moved to the 'New Mineshaft' which was underneath Rockies on Whitworth Street. It was amazing to see the vast numbers of happy people making the exodus up Whitworth Street at 3am in the morning!
The Gay Village
Flyer, 1993
Strangeways 'With love from Manchester' - free postcards for everyone to send to their friends .. printed in metallic with bright red. Nice!
Rockworld
Flyer, 1993
Speaks for itself - a bigger party at Rockworld with a host of people involved too. It appears we won an award from Michelob/City Life - 'Best Lesbian and Gay Club Award' a golden trophy in the form of a bottle of beer - how apt!
Equinox
Photograph, 1993
Dancers - Nicky T*** and Royston Wilson @'Blitz' in Equinox, Bloom Street, Manchester. Nicky was everyone's favourite and there wasn't much to her outfits, but she was a big part of our nights. Royston danced non-stop all night long like a whirlwind!

Number 1 Club
Flyer, 1993
Ethos at the Number One Club - mixed/gay night in Central Street. We seem to remember that the whole club was permanently smoked out with dry ice!

Equinox
Flyer, 1993
4 o'clock to Genocide @Equinox in Bloom Street.
Overdose on indulgence, every Wednesday night .... a big banging tunes night with DJ Chris Collins. (Unfortunately we had complaints about this flyer and the choice of name didn't go down too well with some gay men). The flyers were massive, half A4 size landscape ...

Ethos
Press, 1993
A double page spread article with photos in 'All Points North' (APN) magazine in 1993. Although some of what we said was taken out of context, the article is topical of the time. Note the Calvin Klein white underwear that we gave away, printed with the image from 'Whip it Up' one of our first club nights. The photos were taken on the roof of the car park facing India House on Whitworth Street.

Paradise Factory
Flyer, 1993
Hollywood @Paradise Factory, Sunday nights upstairs in the small dance area to the top of the club. Everyone wanted to carry on partying, even on Sunday nights - this ran for a short time, but it seems that stamina was lacking after a couple of months...
