A lovely letter from Lawrence Howard at Manchester Art Gallery asking Royal Manchester College of Music principal Adolph Brodsky if the students would like to visit the art gallery more.

John Ogdon
Other, 1983
Hahaa! Okay, so this is the amazing original manuscript of the legendary John Ogdon's "Studies in technique for piano" from 1982-3. It's recently made its way to us here at the RNCM.

In its 70+ pages it has so much character! I especially love these pages which give voice to one of Manchester's most important musical legacies, when he disagrees with himself. Like, seriously is displeased.
The scratches and squiggles on the composition are the composer's equivalent of saying "meh, no thanks", all the way to "Nooooooo!" and "Jesus God Christ what IS that?!"

Ogdon was a pupil at the Manchester Grammar School and the Royal Manchester College of Music. He became one of the core members of the Manchester Group, or the Manchester Five or New Music Manchester as it was sometimes known, a group of RMCM students who were pivotal in bringing new classical repertoire to Manchester and England.

Any questions, let me know!
Thomas Baron Pitfield
Garment, 1968
This is one of the many arty items in the Thomas Pitfield collection. Pitfield, whose creative characteristics and attributes are too numerous to list here, was a student and later teacher at the Royal Manchester College of Music. This mask is from his morality play, "Adam and the Creatures". This charming chap is the elephant mask from the play when it was first performed in 1968 in Bowdon, where Pitfield lived during his teaching career at the College.

Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)
Programme, 1984
This programme is from 1984 and showcases one of the most-used designs of RNCM marketing at the time - the music stand mess!
The programme is one of many thousands in the RNCM's archive, charting a huge part of Manchester's music scene from the 1970s to the present.
Peter Maxwell Davies
Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)
Programme, 1974
I love the font on this. So very 70s! The Fires of London was a chamber ensemble, featuring famed alumni Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies. The programme is one of the first "big deal" performances the RNCM did after its opening in 1973 and is one of the more interesting designs before the later 1970s-2000s took over with plainer programmes. The item is from our extensive archive and is one of thousands dating from the early 1970s to the present year.

Thomas Baron Pitfield
Document, 1960
Birdsong in the Morning.
A lovely little ditty by the Royal Manchester College of Music's favourite polymath, Thomas Pitfield. Did you know, that Pitfield and his wife Alice nursed an injured blackbird back to health and it became so attached to them that it used to peck oh his window when they were late feeding it? It ended up moving into their garden.
Pitfield loved nature and used to translate birdsong into score on his many wanderings around Greater Manchester's moors as a young man.
For such a dismal time of year, I thought a little birdsong was in order. Enjoy!

I can tell you that the design and imagery for these programmes have not changed in at least 30 years. The RNCM has supported these concerts for decades. This one is quite a packed line up of music from our students. Who goes or remembers going to the Didsbury Coffee Concerts?!
Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)
Programme, 1976
HAHA! Have a lemon yellow headache.

This programme is from 1976 and is to advertise the concert of Dame Janet Baker, renowned mezzo-soprano. The programme sits with many thousands in the RNCM Archives which detail the musical performances of the RNCM for nearly 50 years.
Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)
Programme, 1973
One of the first programmes that the RNCM ever produced, just weeks after it opened in 1973. And just in case people weren't sure that we did music, we covered the programme in music. This looks to be a facsimile image from one of the original manuscript scores in the archive but I can't figure out which one it could be! Any guesses?
Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)
Programme, 2004
The Rake's Progress! A devilish moral tale of ambition, misadventure and madness. The RNCM performed it in 2004 when we started to design specific programme covers for our headline performances. Who remembers the performance?
Royal Northern College Of Music (RNCM)

This madness is a programme cover for a concert raising funds for the RNCM's "student travel scholarship fund". It is from 1976 and it hurts my eyes a bit so I thought I'd share the headache. You're welcome.

The Vacation Orchestra programme from 1976 complete with weird time-warp design thingy.

This programme is one of many thousands in the RNCM Archives showcasing a huge part of Manchester's classical music scene (and interesting design choices.)
Anna Brodsky
Postcard, 2018
This lovely Christmas card is written to Anna Brodsky (President of the Royal Manchester College of Music Club, scientist, almost runaway-socialist), from Helen Holmes Spicer (neƩ Durham). The card is undated.

This gorgeous booklet is written by Anna Brodsky (President of the Royal Manchester College of Music Club, scientist and almost runaway-socialist). In it she beautifully reminisces about Christmas Eve when she was a little girl growing up in Russia.

Letter, 1925
This beautiful bit of rough cut quality paper is actually a letter from Nina Grieg (soprano) to Anna Brodsky (from the Royal Manchester College of Music) wishing her a merry Christmas and thanking Anna for the copy of a Christmas book she sent (possibly one of Anna's own publications, Christmas Eve from A Girlhood in Russia).

This scrawling script sends Christmas wishes to Adolph and Anna Brodsky (of the Royal Manchester College of Music) from the English composer Edward Elgar.
Arthur Butterworth
Original Artwork, 1984
I absolutely love this sketch on the cover of Arthur Butterworth's "'Tundra' Scenes from the Arctic north lands" which he composed for wind band.
What do you think of the little scene?

Arnold Cooke
Other, 1966
"Winter Nights" by Arnold Cooke, alumnus of the Royal Manchester College of Music. This lovely little song is based off the poem of the same name by Thomas Campion (1567-1620). Looking for something new to hum over something mulled? Have a go!

Arthur Butterworth
Other, 1993
A musical score by Arthur Butterworth based on Virginia Woolf's "Orlando" in which he details of the Great Frost of 1603 is described in great detail: "birds froze in mid-air and fell like stones to the ground."
This manuscript puts Woolf's original words to a short score, the full extent of which is a huge symphony piece.
