When Ida Gertrude Carroll (1905-1995, student and principal of the Northern School of Music) retired from then Royal Northern College of Music in 1976 after 50+ years of dedication to music teacher training, the Ida Carroll Fellowship Appeal was launched. A Research Fellowship, it aimed to honour the work of Ida who received no less than 7 honorary academic distinctions in her time.

What do you remember of Ida?

A charming example of Ida Gertrude Carroll's (1905-1995, student and principal of the Northern School of Music) composition work! Developing the work of her father Walter Carroll (1869-1955, father of Ida Carroll, teacher, composer and music education professional) who is remembered for his music for children, Ida composed music for teacher-training courses.

Elsa Mary Carroll (1898-1993, founder of the Withington Girl Guide Company) here updates family friend Daisy Cousins on her life. The photo she refers to likely one of her with her MBE medal. She also references the Woolworth's fire in Manchester that year, saying she saw the smoke start from the Kendal Milne restaurant windows on Deansgate (now the House of Fraser building).

Did Walter Carroll (1869-1955, father of Ida Carroll, teacher, composer and music education professional) just compliment Joan Bamford (music teacher and former pupil of the Northern School of Music) on an egg called 1942.No.2? I feel thoroughly left out. Aside from making great eggs, Walter compliments Joan on her "spirit [being] just splendid for the training of boys and girls of today."

Do you remember being taught by Ms. Bamford? Elizabeth Joan Bamford went on to become a music teacher in Wigan, earning herself an MBE for her work. Amongst her pupils was a young Sir Ian McKellen!
