The Fall
1987

The Fall - quintessential Manchester band even though they have been through more line up changes than you can count.

I first heard The Fall through listening to John Peel on his evening shows, and as happened with so much of John's show - if he recommended a band you knew you had to go and check them out.

The Fall are by no means an 'easy' listen at least at first on many of their tracks - or if you have ever caught them on an off day live. But a little perseverance and you soon realise that The Fall are one of the greatest bands of our generation. No one sounds like The Fall or Mark E Smith and like many other exceptional Manchester/North West bands who were contemporaries of The Fall - Manchester is integral to their music, to shaping the lyrics and the sounds. The landscape of Manchester is a member of The Fall just like it is with Joy Division or The Smiths, and that is why I love it.

Hit the North is perhaps a more commercial track but it's a great track, not least as Frank Sidebottom did a worthy cover.
