Flyer
A Certain Ratio
16th December 1982

Going through some of my old stuff again found this flyer for well known manchester group and their unknown support group. Spent two weeks in New York in 1982, 10 nights spent in the Danceteria. About the same time Maclomn McLaren was out there doing the double dutch. Grandmaster Flash and hip hop was becoming popular in England.

“According to the Record Mecca site:
UK band A Certain Ratio played with opening act MADONNA at New York club Danceteria (where Madonna worked part time as a hat check girl) in December, 1982. At that point, Madonna had only released one single, her debut “Everybody,” with her debut album still six months off. Madonna appeared at midnight and A Certain Ratio at 1:00 AM. That was typical for New York clubs at the time–even on a Thursday night. For invitees there was also a buffet (at 10PM.)”

“I don`t remember the buffet but I do remember Madonna lip-synching to a backing track with two dancers behind her, and my friend there telling me she was going to be big.”

“Hi Abro, we are currently making a feature documentary celebrating 30 years of electronic music in Manchester, from where it all began to what’s happening right now. We interviewed Mike Pickering who specifically mentioned this night when A Certain Ratio played at Danceteria. Would you be happy for us to use your flyer/photo in the documentary? We would, of course, credit you.

Either way, please drop a note on here or our email is mcrkeepson@gmail.com. Thanks! Jamie”
