1971 was a busy year for ELP, not only did they record and release 2 albums (Tarkus and Pictures At An Exhibition- recorded live in Newcastle) they also found time to do over 80 gigs, visiting the Free Trade Hall twice, once in March and again in December.

On the ticket it says '2nd House' and gives a time of 10:30pm, I'm guessing but does that mean they played 2 shows at the venue that night??

pretty sure i was at this gig as a long haired 16 year old prog rocker. I remember they played mostly Tarkus. I would never have admitted this a few years later when i cut my hair and became a punk!

I turned up at this concert Nearing its end, entering through the doors left open for people to leave, I was looking for my girlfriend who I know had gone to the concert we had fallen out the day before. Me and my best friend went up to the circle and then I saw my girlfriend 17 sat on the steps behind the band on the stage where the Halle orchestra would sit. ELP were playing there encore. She was with her friend. I walked to the edge of the circle and dropped down onto those steps behind the band. I sat down next to my girlfriend and asked her Openly visible in front of 5000 people, whether we were finished, she replied yes I’m going to Scotland with Keith Emerson, I was devastated and climbed back into the circle as the band ended the gig, And she did go to Scotland with Keith Emerson and was on tour with him for a couple of weeks as his groupie. I met her six years later and took her to lunch. Security Would make it impossible to do what I did today
