I'd say 84 or 85 for this - Billy Bragg and Test Dept were prominent in support of the striking miners in those years.

I remember being skint and drinking lime and sodas- the cheapest thing going- for 15p!

This was in the days when you'd often find just a few dozen people rattling round what could feel like a freezing, cavernous, echoey venue. Shivering in our "dead men's overcoats."

One packed night around this time was a Miners' Strike benefit headlined by The Redskins, from York. Tony Wilson (not yet Anthony H) got on stage and intro-d the band and was roundly booed and abused, I recall.

“ah! i have this poster too! i don't actually remember the night. who was the Dj?”
“Not sure about that. Was it Dave Haslam in his early DJ Hedd guise? Think this night morphed into Temperance Club. MIght be wrong.”
“Tony's stories are the bomb. More! Now.”
“I remember this poster because I designed and produced it. Also did the Temperance Club posters for Dave Haslam's night too, but can't remember which one came first .. [so long ago] Glenn ;o)”

“Oh, just realised this version is the flyer .. but there were posters too. I remember doing them and eventually got an invoice from the Screen Printer who titled the job : RAN PONER!”

“Nice work, Glenn. Did you do the Temperance flyers in the "tracing paper" style like the New Order sleeve? I've got one somewhere. Classy.

It would be a classic Factory tale if he'd printed them as Ran Poner! A week after the event!!”

“Yes, twas me who did the semi-transparent paper flyers for Temperance Club. The story of Ran Poner was that the artwork was produced in my studio and then sent to the printers, who in turn then sent me an invoice for the printing marked RAN PONER - at the same time I did some flyers for A Certain Ratio and the very same printer sent my invoice marked 'Al Certun Racio' lol ! true!”

“I managed to visit the Hacienda exhibition at Urbis this week - really enjoyed it. Never seen the hacienda-when-it-was-still-the-boat-shop pictures before. Loads of great stuff.

There is a flyer displayed for the striking miners benefit gig which I mention in the original posting. It reminded me that it was a Lesbian and Gay Miners' Support Group event with Pete Shelley as the support, Lip Service theatre group performed and lots of others participating - 1985. Important to see the sexual politics of the Hac/Factory story reflected - from the inspiration in NYC gay clubs through to Flesh, Manto, Paradise Factory etc.”
