Demo Tape
James
1983

A tape found in the Rob Gretton Archive that features recordings of two very early James gigs.

The tape is accompanied by a note for Rob and the setlist of the second gig is listed. This particular show can be identified as their support slot for New Order at The State Ballroom, Liverpool on 23rd March 1983.

Side A features what is probably an earlier gig that may be The Hacienda judging from the recording, as the gig sounds like it's happening in a large, reverby space. I remember that sound!

“Possibly taped by Larry Gott (not a member of the band back then) on amateur equipment?”

“The State recording is from the mixing desk by the sound of it.”

“Do "Discipline" and "Stutter" on the A side match up with the Hacienda video footage, possibly? If so, you definitely got it right!”

“hmmm, they don't match. Referring to: www.oneofthethree.co.uk/gigs/83gigog.htm there aren't too many other known options, I think this is something not on this list, as everything shown is a support slot and they did play at least The Hacienda as part of a local band night.”
