An image from the Linder Sterling collection, ‘A light with nothing to rest upon’, courtesy of Stuart Shave/Modern Art.

Dickens was a seedy late-night watering hole frequented by cross-dressers, queers and posties. The owners inspected you through a hatch before you could gain entrance. There’s a lot going on in this one. I love the contrast between figures in the forefront – that playful over-the-shoulder glance versus the disapproving stare.

This image featured in the MDMA exhibition 'Queer Noise' at People's History Museum in 2017.
