Nellie Melba
1922

Nellie Melba, born 19 May 1861, was an Australian operatic soprano soloist, and was incredibly famous in the Victorian and early 20th century.

When the First World War broke out, she dedicated her time to raising funds for war charities (she ended up raising £100,000!).

She features on the Australian $100 dollar bill and was the first Australian to be on the cover of Time magazine.

Fun fact: Nellie Melba was the inspiration for the dishes Peach Melba, Melba toast, Melba sauce, and Melba Garniture, created by the French chef Auguste Escoffier!
