Artefact
Myra Hess, born 25 February, 1890, was an English pianist who performed countless times for the Hallé Concert Society and was famous for her performances of Mozart, Bach, Brahms and other composers.
However, her dedication to using music as a source of community-building was showcased best through the lunchtime concerts she organised during the London Blitz, of which there were 1,698 (of those 1,698 she personally performed in 150!). She also encouraged new performers with the concerts, as she gave them the opportunity to play (in the beginning, it was without a fee but eventually, every performer was paid a fee of 5 guineas – except for Myra Hess herself!).
