Artefact

Photograph
Arthur Gaggs, John Bridge, Harry Barlow, Jesse Stamp, Walter Hatton
1912

Photographed here are five North-Western, mostly Mancunian, musicians aboard the SS Potsdam. All five were, at the time, members of the London Symphony Orchestra, but given their roots had strong ties to the Hallé.

'Little Histories' Focus:
Arthur Gaggs, whose name appears in our Hallé Autograph Books, is pictured here front and centre. In 1912, he toured the US with the London Symphony Orchestra, alongside his compatriots photographed here. All men pictured above survived WWI and continued their careers as musicians.

Gaggs' signature precedes this image in the exhibition.
