Artefact
My interview with Graham Massey and Darren Partington of 808 State following their appearance at (a) the Castlefield Arena party the week of the 1996 IRA bomb and (b) their appearance at Greenbelt Christian arts festival. Quite the contrast.
The piece was published after the release of their fifth studio album Don Solaris. I remember Graham tootling on his electronic sax as I arrived for the interview. Very cool. "It's not what you've got, it's how you use it," says Graham in this piece. Graham is still tootling on as 808 State and long may he continue.
The publication is the October 1996 (issue 11) edition of The Student, a rag produced by the Palatine Publishing (comprising former South Manchester Reporter journalists) and distributed to students' unions. A lot of fun to produce. I was Music Editor, writing as Ian Carrington. Editor was John Paul Maytum.
