The Hallé
1887

Litanies 1887. Autograph manuscript scores, signed by Elgar and dated 1887. The earliest known Elgar manuscript material of any length. This is the original manuscript book used by Elgar at the organ of St. George's Catholic Church in Worcester. Elgar burnt the title into the leather cover. Half of the text is in Elgar's hand; the other half is in Hubert Leicester's hand. Leicester was also Catholic, and looked after the music in his father's bookshop, later becoming Mayor of Worcester.
