The Hallé
1904

In The South. Autograph manuscript leaf of the Overture’s opening ten bars notated in brown ink on four systems of two staves each. A gift from Elgar to Frank Schuster, the dedicatee. The manuscript is autographed, “Edward Elgar: Andorra, Jan.1904." This is the first page of the short score, representing the work’s Straussian opening, the remainder of which was most likely discarded after the work was orchestrated. The Hallé premiered this piece in 1904 by the Hallé.
