The Hallé
1899

Serenade Lyrique. Autograph manuscript score of the original version preceding the piano solo version and the version for small orchestra written for Ivan Caryll’s orchestra and published by Chappell in 1899. This is the composing score, which Elgar later revised and polished for use as the engraver’s copy. The French accents are incorrect. It is interesting to see how Elgar refined his original conception, particularly that of the characteristic syncopation in the theme [bars 22-23, 30-31 etc.] as an afterthought.
Date is approximate.
