Mozart form. The bars notated at the top of the page are captioned, “The exquisite passage in Mozart (bars 20 & 21).” Written in short score, this is a quotation from the first movement Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor K.550, notated on a two-stave system. Beneath, in the middle of the page, Elgar has produced a second quotation with the caption text continuing, “is, in this respectful perversion.” The second quotation, this one in full score, is from Elgar’s Incomplete Symphony Movement in G minor, notated on a 5-stave system. Elgar is showing us how he learned symphonic form from Mozart as he took his first steps on a 30-year journey to produce his Symphony No. 1 (premiered by the Hallé).
