The Dream of Gerontius. An early sketch of the ‘softly and gently…’. passage from the Angel‘s Farewell (Rehearsal Cue 126-129). The leaf came from one of Elgar’s first sets of sketch books. This is an instrumental sketch; the inner voices are partly incomplete. Pasted into the Proof Copy of the German version of the Gerontius vocal score and inscribed by Elgar to Averil Woodward and dated by him September 23, 1902.. Averil Alexandra Woodward (1878>1962) studied violin with Elgar when she was a pupil at the Alice Ottley School.
