The Kingdom [Opus 51]. William Higley’s copy of the first edition vocal score used by him to sing the part of Peter in the first performance, with Higley’s markings throughout the text. Inscribed to: ‘The First Peter, with thanks to him, Edward Elgar, Birmingham, October 1906’. Also inscribed by Higley’s fellow soloist: ‘all good wishes to my esteemed colleague from John Coates, Birmingham Festival, 1906’. Autographed by the two female soloists Agnes Nicholls and Muriel Foster. The inside cover notes two subsequent performances in which Higley sang the role: Alexandra Palace, November 19, 1907 and Royal and Tunbridge Wells, March 30, 1908. William John Lewis Higley (1872>1944)was Elgar’s frequent choice to sing baritone solo roles in his choral works e.g. he sang the role of Peter in a performance of The Apostles at the 1905 Worcester Three Choirs Festival.
