Crystals
9th January 1978

Sadly, I can't remember who played on which date - with hindsight this was obviously a bit of bandwagon jumping in the sticks, but as a 16 going on 17 year old Bury Grammar School boy, it was an interesting (and cheap) way to spend my Monday evenings for a few months.
Obviously not the first appearance of Punk/New Wave in Bury as we'd had the Rock Against Racism gig at Crystals in 1977 documented on this site - we'd also had the Reducers' first (?) gig towards the end of 1977 in a basement somewhere in the town centre, but these nights at Crystals gathered together a ragbag of football hooligans, wannabee musicians and intellectual-poets!
I made a lot of friends there.

“hi shadow - great uploads.

did this night attract 'named bands' or was it more of a local bands night?”

“Definitely local bands - I remember The Reducers playing and I'm pretty sure The Dirty Shirts from Radcliffe played, but I can't remember any other band names - a sad reflection on me, I think!

“My own band Nervous breakdown supported the Reducers at Crystals. I met up with the bass player recently, he lives in Wales now and plays in a Reggae band

“The Dirty Shirts did play that gig. I should know I was the bassist! Good night from what I remember.”
