Fireplace
30th March 1979

Pic of Fireplace members at Pennine Studios Oldham. Recorded 2 songs that day - The Dutchman and The Hypnotist, which were scheduled for release by some label or other (I forget which) but which all went belly up when our drummer left and the singer moved to London!! In the way of these things, I associate this day not so much with the music but with the assassination of Airey Neave, the Conservative politician, which was announced on the radio when we were in the studio, just as I associate a gig we did later that year at Erics with Joy Division and the Passage, with Maggie Thatcher, because it was the night she was elected!

“Mitch: No , the Dutchman was never released as a single, because the band split up. Pity, because the version we recorded at Pennine was much better than the collective lp, which was recorded in about 2 hours at Andy Mac's in South Manchester (no money). We also performed it on Granada's What's On, a clip I've never seen because we were playing a gig that night (no VCRs in those days). If anyone has a copy please let me know.”
