Artefact

This is a ticket scan plus the autographs of Howard Devoto and John Cooper-Clarke ... they were in the audience at the Free Trade Hall 11th March 1978 when the Albertos were on, supported by Devo. A fan, John Hall, spotted them and got them to sign the back of his ticket - here it is now!

I was there... Nick Lowe also appeared onstage with the Albertos, in the shape of two (or was it three...?) life-size cardboard cut-outs complete with motorised guitar-playing arms. CP Lee had managed to persuade me to part with these automata, which were merchandising material for Nick's newly released "Jesus of Cool" album, which I was promoting in my capacity as regional rep for WEA Records.

I understand that Bingo Jesus is a sign displayed from a towerblock in Hulme. Is it your flat BJ? Chloe Poems refers to it when introducing a poem with that title.

bingo jesus wasn't exactly a sign... next to the nia centre in hulme is a community church and hanging from the roof was a sheet with 'Jesus' painted on it... it was hung right after to a sign saying BINGO... i have some super8 of it i shot a few years ago along with a load of Hulme, unfortunately after the cresents had come down but luckily before bonsall street was destroyed...

The juxtaposition of those signs has sparked a lot of people's imagination...
