+ more bands. The Festival of the 10th Summer. A long week with 3 gigs in the week (and the Smiths the next night at Salford uni). A fab week and a great day though I was getting a bit bored by the time New Order came on. I'm sure the crowd started doing a Mexican Wave they took that long.

“Heh, yes, we did. It went all the way around the hall once and got bigger applause than some of the bands.”

“I remember the Mexican wave, and Wayne Fontana making some humorous comment about being a punk band. I also remember getting earache because I didn't go and retrieve my then girlfriend from the food queue in time to see Sandie Shaw. Also the increasingly drunk Bill Grundy. John Cooper Clarke was on really good form. The Smiths and The Fall were brilliant. I know what you mean about getting bored by the time New Order came on- I've never been that good at festivals, too long, too much music to digest, however exciting the headliner may be- can we go home now?”

“At least we didn't get rained on. I can't imagine spending that long at a gig again - I can't remember what we did between bands as we had a standing ticket.”

“I seem to recall that there were supposed to be all sorts of things happening between bands which didn't really come off apart from Bill Grundy's drunken tirade and Paul Morley MCing or doing a extended bit. I can remember him introducing Luxuria for their first gig.”

“Just remembered the excellent John Cale at the piano set, shouting 'Fear' if I remember rightly.”
