The Collegians

The Collegians were a 1950s jazz band from Manchester and are listed in Shake, Rattle & Rain, CP Lee's indispensable book on Manchester music.

One member of the band - Ted Calvert - was Eddie Calvert's brother (Eddie had a number one hit with 'Oh My Papa' and was known as 'the man with the golden trumpet') - Ted died after an attack at a gig in Macclesfield where he was playing (ukulele) - it caused a brain haemorrhage and he died three weeks later (1961) he was only 57.
