CONTINUATION OF RAMBLINGS ON LAST UPLOAD :-who'd go Old Trafford while Sir Matt and Tommy Doc were at the helm; and go and see The Faces, Roy Harper, Kevin Coyne, Brinsley Schwartz; (I remember hear tell of Arthur Lee at The Palace, Little Feat and Captain Beefheart at The Apollo (reaaally would have liked to have seen that!) and mostly ‘70’s bands that would play at Hardrock, Stoneground and wherever else....way before my time........
I recall The Buzzcocks doing a live broadcast on Radio One from The Poly one time. I was at home wallpapering (with woodchip if you care to know), while I had the wireless on. Pete Shelley, during the proceedings, paid a bit of a tribute to Ian Curtis who’d only recently died. I can actually recall (not something to forget) , when John Peel announced he’d just heard of his death and then played “New Dawn Fades” , of which I tried my hardest to play along to on the old nylon string guitar I had. I went into where my sisters where watching telly and quite emotionally told them the news ,(I’d only last seen the band a few of weeks earlier ), and my sisters duely empathised, but I think they were none too sure as to whom I meant...cheers anyway....
Well that turned out a bit longer than I thought! The letters are starting to move around on the screen. I spent a lot of time at The Poly and I’ve no doubt forgotten far more than I could ever remember....thankfully. I did like that place though.....I believe the building now houses an archive of photographs of Manchester through the ages so there’s some sort of poetic justice there. Haven’t thought about this stuff for many a year....wonder what happened to a lot of those people......I don’t Spacebook, myface, tweet, flurp or bibble but when I get back every couple of years or so I catch up with some of those old bezzers. The Cavendish was definitely an important part of Manchester musical history and I’m sure many would have a fond memory of that place.....
Oh yeah the flyer....B. Movie, the only song I know by them was called “Remembrance Day” a synthy pop offering with a surprisingly weighted lyric....all about the young conscripted cannon fodder that went over the top in the First World War....possibly the last of the true working class......and of course the good old Fall doing their star turn an’ ting.
