Solem Bar (Academy 3/Hop & Grape)
3rd February 1991

Firstly, I have no idea of the year, it must have been somewhere between 1990 and 1993. The MDM website doesn't let me say 'don't know' to the year so I picked 1991 as a guess.

The venue..... although it was Manchester University it was in the much more intimate Solem Bar. Upstairs from the main hall, not much of a stage but wonderful atmosphere. I also saw The Shamen at this venue.

So the venue isn't listed here - PERHAPS IT SHOULD BE?

An omission? Unless I've overlooked it?

“Bit of an odd one this, The Solem Bar was the old name for what is now the Academy 3.

It was also known as The Hop & Grape for a while too.

The Academy's site has Here & Now playing there in '92”

“This must actually be from 1989 as a quick perusal of old calenders will show that 3rd Feb fell on a Friday that year.”

“Didn't they famously play for free? I recall one evening when, disappointed that we were to be charged to see Here and Now at the Uni- and having no money to speak of- we drove my old car round the back, climbed on the roof and through the window. To make it up to us the band agreed to come and play at the library in Cheetham Hill (am I right about that Zac?) and all got a bit giddy back stage....”
