Pandemonium Records
1984

Alritee then, see what line of extra curricula bullshit I can come up with this time......Was up to City Life March ’84 with Julie Walters on the cover. This, an ad for Pandemonium Records on Oxford Road near The Poly (Mandela Building or whatever it is now). It always seemed a bit on the expensive side so can’t say I frequented it much, plus George, the big old hippy dude was a tight wad. Still it was well known to those who chose to know.........

“sited next door but one to the right of Johnny Roadhouse, up a flight of stairs (currently a tattoo parlour) and run in it's later years by George who was a 'character'. I remember him telling me that he'd ask me to leave if I didn't chat with him whilst digging through the racks... he had some amazing stuff in there but saw it as his own collection and it pained him to sell any of it, in fact he'd offer the service of copying the vinyl you'd brought to the counter to cassette for you for a slightly lower price...unique”

“Before Pandemonium it was Black Sedan Reecords
(Black Seddan then moved to the University Precinct.
George Davenport also had a shop opposite the Odeon on Oxford Rd called the George Davenports Country Music Store (I think). Then I think it possibly had something to do with what became Yanks when it moved back a block or two.?
any one shed any light on that?,
Also Am I right in thinking there was a record store in the Univercity Precinct called Paperchase? I know there was a Paperchse somewhere near cross street or near the Royal Exchange.(great Orange Bags)”

“Wasn't Paperchase in St. Annes Square?
It sold cards and stuff at street level with records in the basement which was accessed at the back of the shop”

“I only visited once, feb 1989, before a Loop gig down the road. I had to pay to get in and had the 50p door money taken off the price of the Echo & The Bunnymen bootleg tape that was posted to me a few days later. Nabbed a poster for a Sandmen gig on my way out as the date had gone. Really wish i still had it as it would make a top upload to this site.”

“I have vivid memories of George Davenports Country Music Store but don't think it had anything to do with Yanks. I remember there was a spiral staircase behind the counter in Yanks and during busy periods the owner (a middle-aged American guy) would perch himself at the top of the metal stairs and keep lookout for shoplifters. No CCTV in those days.

In later years, new management took over and the shop renamed itself Power Cuts by which time it catered mainly for the heavy metal brigade. I think they finally closed down around 1996.”
