Richard Searling
The Sandpiper
1984

From City Life 9, April ’84. A review of a club called Sandpipers. Can’t say I recall it but reading between the lines it sounds a tad crudly dudley. As a lot of the reviews on pretty much every topic in the magazine seem to veer slightly on the harsh side, I wonder whether the reviewers were looking favourably on the venue in lieu of some sort of remuneration; perhaps a few cheeky snifters at the bar? Guess we’ll never know.... Anyway, as a club decked out like a big ol’ jet airliner it could have been worth a visit for the novelty value alone......

“I remember Sandpipers - it was attached to a hotel and staying there guaranteed entry. We were billeted there once in 1979. The entrance had lots of pics of MUFC and MCFC footballers attending the club there was a bar at one end of the "airliner" body and the other end opened out into a dance floor/stage area. The night we stayed my mate grabbed me from the bar right at last knockings and dragged me round to the DJ area and there we met the legend - George Best! Was there a club in Manchester he didn't go to?
I just remembered TJ Davidson was there that night as well he looked like he might have been a regular there.”

“Yeah, yeah remember it all! should be a book about this place! worked there as pot washer / cellarman etc etc. Met basically anyone who played the concert venues especially the Apollo, from Queen to Genesis, Gary Numan, Roger Chapman (played live for FREE!) All the United players plus SIR MATT in attendance, pinch me again, plus the place was a non stop shaggin palace due to the easy hotel admittance if you even new so much as a member of staff..... jeeeeezz , take me back.... Was there when Frank Worthington dropped his trollies... the second best move he ever did!!!! we put a piccy on the wall!!!! that would be worth a few bob now!!!! Bestie and Hurricane Higgins were there plenty too....Gettin too misty eyed.... gotta go.....!!!! ps Richard Searling was MINT........”
