The Hacienda

The sleeve for the Japanese CD single release of the UK chart number 3 'Ain't No Love...'. The picture on the front is either a still from the video or was taken at the time the video was being shot.

The video was shot in the 5th Man, in the basement of The Hacienda on a cold miserable Thursday afternoon. The video was a bit of an after-thought as the single wasn't expected to do as well as it did, so the video hadn't really been previously discussed. It was shot by Swivel Productions, a local video company.

I remember getting a phone call asking if I could get down to The Hacienda that afternoon, as they needed some extras for the shoot. Everyone was asked not to wear red clothing. Luckily I managed to get the afternoon off work and headed down at about 2pm, the time we were asked to meet up. When I got there, a load of my friends were there that had also been asked to come down. The crew weren't ready for the extras yet, so we decided to go into the Canal Bar, a few doors down for a drink - it was happy hour there before 6pm.

Time rolled on and about 4 hours later we still hadn't been summoned, and of course by now we were all pretty merry. Beer was super-cheap and spirits were 2-for-1. By the time we got called it was about 7pm and everyone was very drunk (well, most of us anyway).

During the shoot we had to dance around whilst the band mimed the song, all around a huge glitter ball with polystyrene lettering saying Sub Sub around it. It didn't take long before us drunken idiots started throwing our arms in the air and the lettering started getting damaged, until a couple of the letters became totally unreadable. I remember the director getting a bit annoyed with everyone.

It was good fun though, if a bit messy. If you look at the finished video you can spot Lamb's Louise Rhodes dancing. You won't see too much dancing because my friend Brian wore a bright red jacket, that at the time no-one noticed, but because of the post-production meant they had to cut all shots out with him in- which apparently was nearly all of the crowd shots! Brilliant.
