Johnny Angel Band
The Lamplight Club
1984

Sent in by Martyn Day: The Mike Wood/Dave Chadwick outfit that Dick Owen is referring to in his piece about the Lamplight Club was "The Johnny Angel Band" who played there regularly during the 80's. The band consisted of Mike Wood and Dave Chadwick on guitars, Styx Kershaw on keyboards, Rob Powell on lead vocals, Steve Stradling on drums and Martyn Day on bass. The Lamplight had a lot going for it - two bouncers on the door chucking people in, a carpet so sticky that you need snowshoes to get across it, no glass in the windows in the gents so you could take a pee and watch the people in the houses opposite having for their tea at the same time and delicious hamburgers enjoyed by many. Well, 100,000 flies can't be all wrong! We had some really good times there.

“Fans will certainly want to know know that the Johnny Angel Band self-resurrected in 2010 for the lead singer's 60th birthday at The Irish Club in Chorlton. They pulled this off having met & rehearsed twice in the intervening 25 years --- once in a flea-haunted studio in Stockport c 1999, and once more in an incredibly decrepit mill near 'New Islington' about a week before the Revival itself. It was a feat of almost supernatural chord-and-lyric recall --- helped no doubt by the enduring Spirit of the Lamplight.”
