“An interesting editorial communique, showing that City Fun took on a huge burden in becoming the de facto tool of publicity and communication for the Manchester post-punk scene without ever really planning to. The reference to Rough Trade is significant in this context - they too were left-leaning collectivist idealists whose role rapidly spiralled in importance beyond initial expectations. Rough Trade became the facilitators not just of London post-punk but the entire UK independent music scene through their distribution wing, ironically named 'the cartel'. It helped get DIY independent records in independent shops, as well as giving local fanzines like City Fun a national readership.”
