The Academy 3: The Academy 3 venue is located on the second floor of the original student union building (University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL). It is the second smallest of the University's venues, playing host to upcoming bands and established acts with a smaller audience.
The venue opened in the 60’s and in the past it has been known as The Solem Bar and the Hop & Grape but was renamed Academy 3 when expanded in the mid 2000s. It is also used for meetings by the University and is not open to the public apart from concerts.
Of the four Academy venues, it is the smallest, with a capacity of 470 guests. Known for its barrier-free, up-close atmosphere, it’s a favourite launchpad for emerging acts and has hosted early gigs by artists like Amy Winehouse, Pulp, and Elbow.
Managed by the Academy Music Group, The Academy 3 has undergone refurbishments to improve sound and facilities while preserving its intimate atmosphere. Its strategic location within the university campus makes it a popular destination for students and music lovers alike.
Today, The Academy 3 remains an important part of Manchester’s live music landscape, nurturing new talent and hosting performances that contribute to the city’s reputation as a leading live music destination.
