Drifters was a cheesy nightclub which took over from the Mayflower when it burnt down (if I remember) in hosting punk gigs on Wednesdays and weekends.

I remember seeing Discharge there, with Biffo the Gas Mask supporting, Also Captain Sensible did a gig there where he played an hour of advertising jingles! Only Oxo does what only Oxo can... Persil automatic makes it brighter…to name but two.

Also I went to the Instant Agony gig there and missed it all having been beaten up and pinned down by bouncers after a mate took a load of magic mushrooms and smashed the toilet up. We were arrested and in cells till 4am when a bouncer arrived at the station and told the Police I had nothing to do with it.

Area was full of Mods as me and Evo (Wayne Evans) found out one night after, I think, it was gig by Conflict got cancelled and we seemed to be the only punks in Manchester who didn’t know.  We turned up, only to have to stuff steak puddings with gravy in a tray into the faces of two Mods in the local chippy when we were being threatened by about 6 or 7 of them. We made good our escape whilst their mates looked on in horror at their burns. Serves ‘em right.
