Royal Northern College of Music Image Archive

The Royal Northern College of Music Archives hold a treasure trove of heritage going all the way back to Manchester’s first music College in 1893. This was the Royal Manchester College of Music, founded by Sir Charles Halle, just off Oxford Road. It was the only professional conservatoire in the UK outside of London at the time an trained some of the best known musicians and performers in the Country. In 1920 the Northern School of Music, founded by Hilda Collens, started on Deansgate but soon moved to Oxford Road. This institution focused on training music teachers and in 1973 it merged with the RMCM to form the Royal Northern School of Music, also on Oxford Road. The RNCM Archives hold the stories of all three of these institutions as well as collections of staff and students. Through photographs, documents and more this exhibition will showcase some of the wonderful items in its holdings.
