The Mancunian Gay Magazine

Uncovering Manchester's LGBT music history within the pages of the Mancunian Gay magazine. Over its lifespan (1978- 1986) the Mancunian Gay magazine documented the evolution of Manchester's gay community. Its front pages shed light on a dynamic and vibrant era for queer community activism during the 1980’s. An era equally defined by homophobia, police harassment and the AIDS crisis.

A review of Divine at Hero's 1981. She arrived onstage on a motorbike. Seems the reviewer felt there was a shortage of 'grossness'! Hilariously, it states that New Order had their photo taken with Divine on the motorbike. There's a picture I'd like to see.

Les Cokell

This is a Les Cokell and Ian Wilmott chart from 1983. It was published in the Mancunian Gay - a gay man's magazine edited and published independently in Manchester.

Les Cokell was a hero of the hi-NRG scene, and a leading light at Hero's off John Dalton Street. Prior to this era he was a celebrated Northern Soul DJ.
