The History of Soil in Scraps of Paper

Late in 1984, I joined a band consisting of three Blackley school-friends: Kev Siddall (guitar), Lee Bennett (bass) and Rob Kerford (drums). The idea was that I would sing and play keyboards, though later Kev took over the singing and I would switch between keyboard, guitar and harmonica.

Kerf left and we recruited Gary Farrell.

Sometime in 1985/6, I bumped into Morrissey at Piccadilly Station and gave him a tape. He later wrote us a succinct piece of fanmail on a postcard, reading:

I listen to your tape seven times an hour, when can I see you play?

He never came along to any of our gigs, but he did invite us to support The Smiths at the Kilburn National, the night that Rank was recorded.

The images in this exhibition demonstrate that I keep all sorts of rubbish, but am no kind of archivist.
