DJ Liz Wright aka Lizwold moved to Manchester in June 1979 aged 20. She first started working as the DJ at the Friday Gay Disco at Manchester Poly Aytoun Street. Playing 7” singles- New Romantic and pop. The deck was a two turntable mixer balanced on a table so every time some one got too drunk, they’d bump it and jolt the record.
She then started at a new club, Manhattan, run by Peter ? Who also was the landlord at The Rembrandt.
Avril A was a frequent ‘act’ and dare we say, she was so bad, she was good!
With the help of Glenn and Brendan, Liz then got the job of DJing at the Hacienda- starting a gay night. It wasn’t hugely successful due to it being on a Monday and far from the safety of the gay pubs around Piccadilly. However, we did host a fab night with Jimmy Somerville and The Communards!
Liz was also resident DJ at Follies in Whitworth Street for a few years before she left Manchester in 1990.
She continued to DJ in London, at Brompton in Earls Court, the Royal Oak in Hammersmith and Richmond Arms.
She hung up the headphones in 1997.
