“I was there, I remember my girlfriend nearly breaking her arm in the crush to get in, the floor really boucing, the speakers looking like they were topple off the stage and pushing my way from the front to the back. Raimonde (Morrisey's friend, James Maker I think) did support, they were pretty good too.”
“Elliot Eastwick used to live in a flat upstairs from me in Salford, about 1989/90, and practiced dj ing in the flat at night. I remember going up to tell him to turn the volume down. He did, but wasn't very happy. I don't think he stayed there very long.”
“I spent many happy boozy Sunday evenings in the Kings Arms in Salford watching RBWP. My memory may be clouded by the pints of Holts. I remember the bagpipe player tuning up in the toilets before playing 'All along the watchtower', unusual.
Another classic was a song inspired by a chance encounter with a drunk in a fish and chip shop in Little Hulton called Chip Ahoy. The song was called 'Give us a doner (and stick it on a barm).
I also remember a friend bringing his cat to the packed pub one Sunday night, not sure if it ever got home, maybe it's still there.”
“! went to this concert with my girlfriend (now wife of 20 years). We arrived early to get at the front, my girlfriend getting trapped in the stampede to get in. We saw Raimonde (the support act), fronted by James Maker, a friend of Morrissey.
I seem to remember the venue being unsuited to such a large excited crowd. The crowd were making the floor and stage bounce, the stage crew were trying to stop the speakers toppling off the stage onto the crowd.”
“Yes the Talk of the North was a real celeb venue in the mid seventies, Shirley Bassey, Des O'Connor etc. It might have been owned and run by the same bloke who owned The Wendover hotel in Eccles, another 'quality' venue.
My own connection with the place was when it fell into neglect in the early eighties and became Randy's Fun Bar. After a skin full in Eccles, I'd go there to watch the, 'cabaret' (a bloke in a dress doing Timewarp), and try to stay out of the numerous fights. I once saw three seperate fights taking place in there at the same time, honest. My last memory was going with some friends, one of whom tried to kill themselves in the toilet.
