Buzzcocks, Magazine
Free Trade Hall
21st July 1978

I was walking home from work and saw people lining up waiting for free tickets outside Virgin records Manchester. This was for a one off concert of Buzzcocks and Magazine at the lesser free trade hall filmed by Tony Wilson and granada t.v. This was to celebrate the famous gig when buzzcocks supported the pistols there 2 years earlier in 76. Was a great night hardly anyone in the crowd really and Magazine were amazing, howard Devoto even came on stage and sang a song with the Buzzcocks for old times sake.

“that is a great flyer. designed by linder sterling, (of Ludus). it must have been a top gig.”
“It was Mat. It was one of those special ones. I saw Magzine a few times and the Russell club Moss side was a classic too!”
“I was there too it was great, got my free ticket from the old Virgin on little lever street (I think)
There were a few shots of me dancing at the gig in the Tony Wilson Special on Granada. This was in the days before anyone could afford a video recorder.
I suppose the tapes have been wiped of this concert as I don't ever remember seeing any clips since.
I was also at the Russel club but left before the band came on as someone broke my nose!
ah! them were the days.”

“Seems it still exists in the ITN archive, details from www.itnsource.com :

27/07/1978 - WHAT'S ON (B'DUM, B'DUM)

Features The Buzzcocks singing 'Love you more', 'What do I get?', 'I can't explain' and 'I don't mind'. Also features Magazine singing 'Motorcade': a young Mick Hucknall can be seen in the audience. Shows the contrasts between Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley.”

“The whole documentary of this gig is available to watch on youtube, in 5 instalments.....it appears to be the original master tape from Granada TV, complete with clapperboard intro.
The interview with Pete Shelley was conducted in the Woolworths cafe in Piccadilly, as there were no trendy wine bars in which to interview 'pop stars' in them days!

“Hiya jsz, can you tell me how you know that's Mick Hucknall at the Magazine gig? It certainly looks like him but wondered if that was an urban myth! thanks”
