Poster
Buzzcocks, John Cooper Clarke
Mayflower Club
25th March 1978

A fantastic silver and red poster for a great looking gig... The Mayflower Club was in Belle Vue. This must have been a very anticipated gig as it was on two nights! Promoted by Harvey Goldsmith- promoter for Live Aid! I think this was 1978 but I could be wrong.... ?

“Hello mat I was at this gig, was a good scruffy stand up venue, much prefered this type of place to see the bands.”
“Hi Mat & Wayne, I remember going to the Mayflower Club around this time with some guys from Accrington...well, slightly vague memories but I think it was at this this actual event- anyway, I don't recall seeing J C Clark but (almost)distinctly remember The Buzzcocks being supported by The Slits, The Worst and Patrick Fitzgerald(maybe JCC was on the 'other' evening, dunno)... whatever, it was the one & only time I went to this venue and can fully remember being struck by how grotty, smelly, threadbare and perfect the place was. Pete Shelley came off stage, after their set, handing out those little 'another music in a different kitchen' badges to the audience (the innocence and benevolence of the time!!)... and The Worst were sublime!”

“Think I have the ticket for this somewhere-will post. Amazing that Harvey G. put this together-a few years before he would go on to greater things. the health & safety issues must have been insurmountable but no-one seemed concerned-perhaps hoping that the punks would disappear with the building. All those venues were the same and my memories of 70s/early 80s gig-going were picking my way across some god-forsaken post-industrial/post war bombsite, more often than not pursued by roaming packs of dogs and feral urchins/their skinhead elder brothers. So we suffered for our art.”

“I remember one 'feral urchin' who used to stalk up and down the queues for punk kids doing his best to intimidate anyone who crossed his eyeline.
Oh and I went to both nights. Just remember JCC trying the front door of the club which was locked as we waited to get in.”
