Portland Bars
1980

The Portland Bars 1980, ahh those were the days. Anyone who played there during this period will remember unloading gear in a loading bay just off Portland street, which stank of cabbages and rotting fruit. Then you had to travel down in the service lift of the Piccadilly Hotel, with all the gear, to the Bars below, top stuff.

Anyone remember Portland Bill?

“mmmm, I remember certain other 'chaps' who used to work there who always seemed to need to speak to us in the 'Dressing Room' just as we used to be in the middle of getting changed......maybe we should have concentrated on the 'Franky goes to Hollywood' market :-)”

“I remember Portland Bill Mercer, full of tattoos and a dodgy blond quiff looking a like a cross between the A Flock of Seagulls lead singer and Jerry Lee Lewis. Fancied himself as a bit of a stand-up comic and used to do a 'slot' before the main event.I think he was an ex-Ted.His jokes were as bad as his clothes but I wouldn't say this to his face as he looked as though he could handle himself”
