Trefor Davies remembers piano lessons with Eileen Chadwick at the Northern School of Music.

Trefor: Eileen Chadwick was my piano teacher and I can remember her saying to me ‘you’re gonna be put on Mrs Curwen’s rhythm books because that’s why your sight-reading isn’t as good as it should be’. So you were told. So I did, I did Mrs Curwen until it was coming out of me… and she said ‘when John Wilson came to this college first, he was fifteen years old. He could play almost anything by ear’. She said ‘he came and we auditioned him and he played Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin) and it wasn’t note perfect but it wasn’t far off, but he couldn’t read it’. *laughs* So she said ‘so you’ve got a chance, Trefor’.

Part of the #NSM2020 project "A 20/20 Legacy: the centenary of the Northern School of Music" supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
