Josiah Chapman
1860

This cello bow was made in Germany in around 1860. The frog (the part of the bow that keeps the strings/hairs in place), is made of a carved piece of boat-shaped ivory with a floral motif. It was part of the Josiah Chapman collection, now part of the RNCM museum.
The inscription above the frog reads "SANCTUS SERAPHIN" but is not related to the violin-maker Santo Seraphin from 18th century Vienna.
