This instrument is catalogued as a Quinton / violin / ‘pardessus de viole’. Essentially a 5 stringed chimera (despite this being a 4 stringed instrument) between a violin and viol, and was played by bracing it on your lap and bowing like a cello.
It was made around 1740, likely in Paris, but was acquired by collector Josiah Chapman and brought to Manchester where it was sent to John Shaw in Hulme for repair in August 1903.
